Shaina from Literacy Central Vancouver Island generously shared some of her time with us to describe the resources that the organization provides to the Nanaimo community.
1. Can you summarize what role LCVI plays in the community?
We are a non profit organization that provides literacy, numeracy, ESL and digital literacy support for individuals and families in Nanaimo and surrounding communities. We have exceptional tutor volunteers; many of whom are retired teachers and professionals with a keen interest in offering their skills, knowledge and experience to supporting all LCVI clients. We offer 1-1 tutoring support, group sessions and in school support for children in SD68.
2. What is your position and what kind of work do you do within LCVI?
I am the Family & Adult Literacy Coordinator for LCVI. As a former teacher myself, I provide literacy, numeracy assessments for adults and children. I also provide ESL assessments for children. This information allows me to pair clients with tutors I feel will best meet the needs if the learners. I support our tutors with resources, strategies and anything else they may need to help clients in their skill development. I also network with other organizations to provide services. We are constantly expanding and looking for new ways to support the community.
3. Who in Nanaimo can be helped by Adult programs at LCVI?
Our services are open to anyone looking for help in literacy, numeracy and ESL.
4. Is there a cost for any program at LCVI?
All of our services are free to the community.
5. How can the community show support for LCVI?
People can offer support through donations, bookstore membership and volunteering.
