Literacy Central Vancouver Island is developing a new literacy program called TradeSkills. The program is set to launch in the new year, and will be focusing on empowering men in the trades by enhancing their reading, writing, math and computer skills. The program is intended to help participants excel in their current careers, consider new career opportunities, and become engaged community members.
PAN connected with Becky Thiessen, TradeSkills Coordinator, to learn more.
*What is the goal of this new program?
This program aims to support men who may be experiencing frustration, stress and anxiety in their current situation, whether it is work or training; and to support them if they are struggling with injury, substance dependency or feelings of being alone.
Who is the program for: Men could be either interested in completing their GED, applying for a trades-related program or currently in a training program and need mentor support and/or tutoring. Another scenario may be that someone is currently working in the trades, but may be interested in a career change and is seeking to increase other essential skills such as: document use, communication and working with others.. We will be offering group sessions and workshops around other topics as well: substance use and harm reduction, understanding pain management, managing stress etc.
*How does the program offer support?
The idea is to offer individualized learning plans and tutoring in areas such as reading, writing, math, computer skills. We will also be connecting men with mentors, providing trades related workshops, computer and internet access, reducing isolation and providing community.
*Where does your funding come from?
Funding is provided from VIHA Population and Public Health: Resiliency and Safety Grant. We are developing a prevention program to increase literacy, numeracy and digital literacy skills for men in trades or interested in trades. The goal is to improve workplace resilience and individual safety related to the toxic drug crisis.
*What is your timeline for this new program?
Our aim is to launch the program in the new year. We are currently seeking participants and mentors for the program.
*How can interested people reach out?
